It's cloudy today

I took the advice of a friend of mine, Rix, and decided to google why the water in the pool is cloudy. I have been relying on the expertice of the "pool man" to resolve the problem, but it only gets worse everyday. His last recommendation to us was to drain the pool, add fresh water that needs to be brought in because the well water is has too high of TDS levels!

So, I read on and this is what I found out...

Cloudy, Dull, Hazy Water

Suspended micro particulate matter, interfering with the passage of light is known as turbidity. It can range from an almost imperceptible haziness to a pure, milky white color. Besides being unattractive, cloudy water can prevent the rescue of swimmers in trouble and may provide no depth perception for those who would dive into the water. This particulate matter also interferes with the ability of the filter and chemicals to properly sanitize the water.

This particulate matter can be carbonates and sulfates forced out of solution by imbalanced water, perhaps worsened by the introduction of high temperatures. The situation could also be the result of poor filtration and sanitation programs. It can indicate a problem with the effectiveness of the filter or the amount of time its allowed to run each day or it may point to sanitizer residuals being too low or inconsistently applied. Finally, cloudy water may result from pool water which has reached saturation. High TDS levels may not permit any more solids from being dissolved or saturated into solution.

Use of clarifiers, or chitin products such as Sea-Klear work to coagulate smaller particles into larger, filterable clumps. Use of these products are a helpful boost to your sanitation and filtration program, and are especially necessary in pools with undersized or inefficient circulation/filtration systems.

For extremely cloudy pools, shocking with lithium or sodium hypochlorite, followed by constant filtration with the use of clarifiers may be the best solution to the problem. If not, you may want to drain some of the water and dilute with less saturated fill water and / or use a flocculent to settle suspended material to the bottom for vacuuming.

I have been using clarifiers, shock, and it seems to get worse! Today I get out my trusty pool chemistry kit, pretend to know what I'm doing and finally fold and call a 800 HELP hot line number on one of the numerous packages of chemicals that we own.

I don't know if all HELP lines are directly connected to my pool man but he called today to ask how the water was doing and gave me the name and number of a man who hauls water! One load, 4,000 gallons, we need 5 loads, $100 a load...Hmmmm $500 BUCKS! I can do THAT math!

It's cloudy today...
And it's going to be cloudy tomorrow!!!

Maybe I'll try the flocculent...not to be confused with flatulence, but hey, what can it hurt?

Ok, so I totally giggled when I read flocculent because my mind thought of how it sounded like flatulence... then you would have a jacuzzi though, right? (I am just glad someone else thought of it.)

It all sounds very official and scientific to me. I would probably try a few other things before the water but not too much because you dont want to spend that $500 only to turn around and possible spend it again! Aaagh! (As a first time homeowner I am learning just how expensive houses and all their little "perks" can be.)

Now, too bad it wasn't cloudy with a chance of rain because then you could use your new umbrella!

Can I count on your American Idol opinions tonight? :)

becs, I am going to try a few other things before we spend the moola to have the same water delivered...it comes from the same water source that we already have! I might need Jaded to help me with the factors though...this is were algebra and chemistry mix! I saw the chart and freaked!

Umbrella? Oh, I am going to have to tell you about that! Email! Let's just say, don't be going and buying Lexie one!

And yes, count on me for my bias opinion on AI! It's getting down to the knitty gritty!
