Woke up this morning about 4:15 to the sound of rain, thunder in the background and an occasional flash of lightning...then all of a sudden all hell broke loose. The rain began to hit the windows harder, the thunder was louder and the lightning was so close it lit up the whole house. The the winds came...they had to be at least 100 mph! The windows were rattling, and shaking like they were ready to burst. At this point I didn't know whether to take cover in the basement or ride out the storm.
I ran and turned on the television to the weather channel to see if we were in the middle of a tornado. The obnoxious beeping noise was on and the scrolling warning on the bottom that was the color red was impossible to read. I was able to make out that there wasn't a tornado warning, but severe thunderstorms. Funny, it sure seemed like a tornado to me!
At one point during the storm I saw one of our patio chair cushions fly across the driveway heading to the neighbors house. A couple of small tables where being thrown around the yard as well as some patio chairs.
Around 6:30 the storm seemed to calm down and I ventured outside to assess the damage. What a mess...Tables, chairs over turned, yard ornaments pulled from the ground and strewn throughout, my tomato plants and flowers bent over and potted plants that once where in planters were now out of their pots and no where to be found.
Then I looked in the way back yard, and two trees lay on their side...and all I could think of was how lucky we were that they weren't close to the house. My pear tree survived, but now instead of shimming up the tree to pick fruit I will be picking pears up off the ground.
I will update this later with pictures...
It was one helluva storm!
