The other day we noticed some buzzing going on around the window in the kitchen. Mr Wonderful looked out, and thought they were honey bees so he called the local bee keeper to come out and capture the hive and take it to a safe place.
Mean while, I took a good gander at it and exclaimed that those weren't honey bees...they're friggin' wasps! On the phone to the bee keeper to cancel the appointment and find some brave soul that will come out and get rid of this hive...
I am not afraid of wasps, and thought that if you leave them alone, they will in turn leave you alone. I couldn't resist walking past them yesterday and prove that I was right, and at the same time hoping they weren't going to attack me and prove me wrong.
They are very aggressive right now, but I think it's only because they are eager to build their hive and set up housekeeping. Little do they know their home sweet home will be exterminated today...Good bye wasp family!
Of course I had to get a picture of it, and NO I didn't have the 200mm zoom lens to get up this close and personal...I am brave!

And while I was outside this morning being the amateur photographer a plane went over head and I snapped a picture of it...NOT!

I hate wasps. My brother is deathly afraid of them after once being stung by 3 while mowing the lawn. OF course, we get them down by spraying and running and then knocking the nest down with a broom handle. ha ha.
Actually Flam I think you got hornets there. You are really brave going in for the photo, that's for sure!
Wasps, hornets...they will attack unprovoked! RUN!!
Really nice photo of the plane....I really like the way the Sun is peeking through that perfect circular opening the most, though!
becs...Mr W is the scared one, but thanks to jimi, I just learned they are not wasps, they are hornets!
jimi...the hornet killer man just left. He said we had a lot of them and sprayed.
GA...I can assure you, I will NOT be outside taking more pictures of the hornets today. Oh, and that's the friggin' plane that was flying over terrorizing me! I'll post the other picture here so others can see...Just like the hornets though, he's gone too!
You're a brave soul. That's quite a nest!
Thanks for the comment on my blog. I updated the post so that now it has a link to this blog.
I'll look forward to getting a report about Lexie's reaction.
rick...I guess I am braver than I thought! No way am I going near them now! Not even with a zoom lens!
Thanks for the link to my blog here :) I'll let you know how my flamingal friend likes the drawing! I know she's going to love it! Next I'll have to have you do one for me!
Now you know what the saying really means when they say " someone is mad as a hornet ! "
Yep...thats a hornet. I got stung by one yesterday while mowing the lawn. My foot hurt for hours afterward. I've been stung by a wasp and a bee before...never a hornet. OUCH.
Glad you got rid of em.
(Yes...I still read you everyday, in case you wondered.)
Whaddya do with the nest? I know a boy who'd think it was pretty cool, I think!
Can you imagine what woulda happened if you'd been stung on your HFA?? :)
what's shaking...yes I do know now how mad a hornet can be especially after hornet killer man sprayed! They were not Happy Hornets!
jaded...OUCH! I think I'll leave the mowing up to Mr Wonderful from now on~
rixblix...Like I told Jimi, if you want the hive, come and get it! First come, first serve. Mr Wonderful thinks we should put it on ebay! Oh yeah, and he thought hornets were green too...duh!
In my youth I found that a firecracker lit and placed into a wasp or hornet nest was effective at getting rid of the nest.
idnkm...how did you ever get close enough to the nest to put a firecracker in? Hornets as I have learned are very aggresive!
Being young, daring, foolish and invincible made it easy!
idnkm...KIDS! sheesh!
