Meet Leif...

It was a beautiful day outside so I thought I would take advantage of the lovely weather, and start putting up some Halloween decorations. I got most of them up , but thought I would leave the rest of them for Mr. Wonderful and I to do over the weekend...

I was on the front porch and looked up and saw this...

What the HELL kind of BUG is this? I am not afraid of bugs, but when I got a closer look at it, I thought...it's got some kind of pincher on his... WTF is that? A leg? Arm? Looks like a Venus Fly Trap! And then I clicked on the picture to make it bigger and those little spikes going up that growth coming out of his neck! OMG his buggy eyes and that translucent face...YIKES! I can't believe I got that close to it! That sucker could have clamped onto me!

So, I just had to name him "Leif" because well, if you look at his wing...it looks like one! Leif will not be an indoor pet...I think he would be happier outdoors with the other "Leif's" or is it Leives?

We always call those bug praying mantis! Haven't seen one in a while.

Indeed a praying mantis, and a magnificent creature it is. And beneficial. They eat pests. I'd never seen one firsthand until I moved to Peoria. Long may they prey.

Thank you all for identifying the Leif for me…Mr. Wonderful came home and I showed him the picture and he also said it was a praying mantis. He asked where Leif was and I told him…I think the wind blew him away because he’s gone…
And don’t worry Diane…I didn’t hurt him! If I knew that he ate bugs he would have been more than welcome in our home…What’s with all the flies around here? Eeeeew!

I used to love those little creatures as a kid, just because they were so freaky-looking. Now I only see them out at my mom's house in the woods out north of Peoria.
And yes, what is up with all the flies?? Last week I was killing about 8 per day, and they were little newbie flies. Not the big old fat ones. Thought maybe something had died somewhere in the house and they were breeding.

We have a sun porch and they are getting in there somehow through the floor...I think I know what was attracting them, the poop patrol was under the deck! I'm killing them off and armed with Raid in one hand and my flip flop in the other!Friggn' Flies!

We have praying mantises (mantisi?) all over the place here. One night a week or so ago I was held hostage outside because I refused go near the screen door. It was a 1/2" from the handle (and just as long!). I stood out side and screamed for my boyfriend until he came out and shooed it away. I was made fun of the rest of the day but I didn't care!

I'm not afraid of bugs...and the more I look at "Leif" the cuter I think he is...did you click on the picture and make it larger? He looks as if he's smiling and wondering if he could get some wallet size photos and an 8x10 suitable for framing! Okay...maybe not, he's probably praying I won't blind him anymore with my flash!
